Artificial cobweb: chemical and phisical analysis
Between 1991-1993, during the war in Croatia, an unknown man-made organic material nicknamed "artifical cobweb" was found in the fild. This new material exhibiting very strange properties and was dispersed over a wide area, caused initial public disturbance. The physical and chemical properties of the "artifical cobweb" were studied by several civilian and government institutions, both inside and outside of Croatia. The results were consistent with and confirmed our own assays. The structure of the "artificial cobweb" is very similar to the natural one ; it is composed of at least two gelatinous organic materials of different viscosity. The one is core-carrying metter of a higher strength, and second one is less viscous, attracting matter used for protein contrasting. Single fibers have different diameters spanning the range over 0.1 - 1 microns. Such fibers are braided into bundles, or "spun yarn" up to 2 mm, which is extremely sticky to all materials except itself. Experimental methods: infrared spectroscopy, light and scanning electron microscopy. We deduce that the artificial cobweb is biologically inspired composite material. Because of the high cost needed for its production an delivery, a "full scale biological experiment" is the most benign qualification of the conclusion.
