Bioinformatic analysis of carbon utilization pathways in Lactobacillus amylovorus strains
Strain Lactobacillus amylovorus DSM 20531 has previously been shown to possess potential for degradation of polymeric substrates, carbohydrates and proteins. Apparently, these activities are constitutively expressed and can result in production of biomass, bacteriocin amylovorin and up to three fermentative end-products (D-lactate, L-lactate, and acetate). Microbial physiology, biochemistry and bioinformatic approaches have been employed to study underexplored metabolic potential of this strain. Physiological experiments revealed several unknown routes in poorly characterized carbon utilization pathways. To identify genetic basis of the experimental data we perofmed de novo assembly and annotation of the L. amylovorus DSM 20531 genome. The comparison of these results with the publically available genome sequences of the GRL 1112 and GRL 1118 strains indicated the extent of the intraspecies metabolic diversity. This bioinformatic approach allowed us to create carbon utilization pathways network supporting our experimental findings that opens new possibilities for more focused experimental set-up in further physiological characterization of the L. amylovorus DSM 20531 strain.
