Remember the dead in Roman and Late Antique Ephesus: local vs imported lamps in the burial and post- burial rites at the Harbour necropolis

During the 2007-2010 archaeological investigations in the area of Ephesus harbour necropolis, conducted by the Austrian Archaeological Institute, a considerable amo-unt of ceramic artefacts, including the lamps, were recovered. In the funeral contexts of the 3 rd and 4 th c. AD lamps were included in grave assemblages. On the contrary to this custom, in the later Late Antique period lamps are usually not documented wit- hin graves, but numerous examples in their proximity testify to commemorative bu-rial and post-burial activities. The stylistic and morphological traits of studied lamps indicate that the funeral activities in the investigated grave houses were confined to the period from the 3 rd to the 5 th c. AD. Furthermore, the mentioned analysis suggests that the majority of lamps are produced locally, thus building up our knowledge on characteristic traits of Ephesian craft production. The presence of several imports, on the other hand, reflects some trends in the economic and cultural activities between Ephesus and other parts of the Mediterranean during the advanced Roman and Late Antique times.
