The effect of extraction parameters on tocopherol and pigment content in hemp seed oil obtained by supercritical CO2

In the past few decades, the Cannabis sativa L. hemp variety has been unfairly neglected because of its similarity to the illegal kind Cannabis indica L. used as a narcotic. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of extraction pressure, temperature and time on tocopherol and pigment content (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total carotene) in hemp seed (Cannabis sativa L.) oil obtained by supercritical CO2. The extraction process was conducted in newly designed and built supercritical fluid ex¬traction system. The supercritical fluid extraction conditions had significant influence on the composition of hemp seed oil. The amount of α- tocopherol in hemp oil ranged from 37.09 to 110.61 mg L-1, depending on the applied process conditions. γ-tocopherol content was significantly higher (2-3 times) than the content of α-tocopherol, while the content of β- and δ-tocopherols were low or not detected. The content of pigments in the hemp oil significantly changed during the process of extraction. Chlorophyll a content was in the range from 101.11 to 378.28 mgkg-1, chlorophyll b 65.14 to 189.78 mgkg-1, and total carotene content from 33.58 to 132.67 mgkg1.By selecting the relevant process conditions of supercritical extraction it is possible to obtain hemp seed oil with physical or nutritional properties of interest to the food industry. Because of the oil’s high quality, as well as the high content of high-quality components in hemp seeds which positively affect human health, this research is very significant regarding the small number of published studies on hemp seed oil. Widespread implementation of supercritical fluid extraction technology especially in the field of edible oils is still necessary. Utilization of natural materials for the production of high value-added products using “green” separation technologies such as supercritical CO2 extraction will likely continue to be of great interest to different industries.
