The Counts of Zrin in the Age of the Jagiellonians (1490-1526): An Example of Old Aristocracy under New Circumstances

The history of the counts of Zrin starts during the reign of Louis I of Anjou, when two members of the Šubić family received from the king the castle Zrin in Slavonia in exchange for Ostrovica. During the fourteenth and fifteenth century the family played an important role in the political life of the Kingdom of Hungary-Croatia. Simultaneously, they were integrating in the local environment of Southern Slavonia. In that respect they have focused on obtaining estates, on establishing connections with local nobility and on maintaining their human potential (in regards of their retainers). Last members of the family (those of the sixteenth and the seventeenth century) were later elevated on the level of national symbols, for both Hungarians and Croatians. The family had, and still has, an important place in the scholarships of both Croatia and Hungary. The story of this paper evolves around the political and social life of the family in the period which was fairly researched by the scholarship, the period after the death of King Matthias. The main focus will be placed on their political activity, especially during the Ottoman fights, both in Slavonia and Croatia (where they still maintained their possessions), from the battle of Krbava upon the loss of Bribir and the battle of Mohacs. Furthermore, the paper will analyse their role within the local Slavonian and Croatian milieu – relations towards the other magnates (from disputes to alliances and marital arrangements, for example with those of the counts of Blagay or the counts of Krbava).
