Psychosocial impact of dental aesthetics in Croatian adolescents: validation and reliability of psychometric instrument
Aim: Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ) is designed for adults, and this study aimed to test it`s applicability in adolescents in Croatia. Materials and Methods: Psychometric properties of the Croatian version of PIDAQ (partially reformulated for adolescents) was tested on a sample of 131 participants (66% females) aged 11-17 years, referred to orthodontic practice for consultation or treatment. Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need (ICON) and Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) were assessed intraorally. Results: PIDAQ domains have satisfactory internal consistency in adolescents (α ranging from 0.793 for Aesthetic Concern (AC) to 0.917 for Dental Self-Confidence (DSC) ; p<0.001) and average inter-item correlations in each domain (r ranging from 0.470 for Social Impact (SI) to 0.648 for DSC). Spearman correlations representing convergent validity showed that domains are measuring similar constructs as satisfaction with teeth appearance (ranging from r=0.758 for DSC to -0.462 for SI ; p<0.001), and to some extent constructs of self-perceived altered dental aesthetics, self-perceived malocclusion and self-assessed treatment need for improvement of dental aesthetics. PIDAQ domains are able to discriminate adolescents with orthodontic treatment need (IOTN DHC≥4 and ICON≥4) from those with no or borderline need (p<0.05). In responsiveness testing PIDAQ dimensions were able to detect changes induced by straightening of the teeth (p<0.001), but the amount of correction of tooth contacts displacement resulted only in decrease of psychological impact (p=0.040). Conclusion: Psychometric characteristics of PIDAQ in Croatian adolescents are similar to those in adults, confirming it`s applicability in that earlier age.
