The Pula Arena-from Roman to present times
The most monumental and the best preserved Roman era building in Pula is great Roman amphitheatre, colloquially called Arena. Its appearance dominates Pula bay area, and is the city symbol for centuries. The amphitheatre was originally erected outside the ancient city walls, primarily because of its size, but also because its builders opted to use mildly sloping Kaštanjer hill that had been reaching the shoreline at the time of the building. The slope has been partially cut into in order to get flat surface needed for the central space used for fighting, and also to use it as the base for terraced viewing area in the eastern portion of the amphitheatre. Since that section of the amphitheatre sits on a natural slope, smaller quantity of finely cut stones were needed for the outer wall of the building. This led to considerably less building material and construction time used during the construction. Pula amphitheatre is a rare example of such use of a natural slope in construction throughout the entire Roman Empire.
