Isotta Nogarola – The Beginning of Gender Equality in Europe

This text focuses on two works by Isotta Nogarola (1418?–1466): her early letter to Ermolao Barbaro and her mature work, the Dialogue on the Equal or Unequal Sin of Adam and Eve. Her letter to Ermolao Barbaro already shows traces of her style, which will become fully developed in the Dialogue: in one layer of textual meaning, she uses irony to give advantage to her male interlocutor, but in another layer she shows herself equal or even superior to him. A particular emphasis is put on the almost neglected second “edition” of her Dialogue, complied and published by her ancestor Francesco Nogarola in 1563. A comparison between the two editions shows differences in the perception of educated women: a female scholar who must fight for and justify her participation in a male-dominated setting of a philosophical discussion (in Isotta’s Dialogue) becomes a welcome and desired interlocutor in Francesco’s Dialogue.
