Spreding of asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) in continental Croatia

The Asian tiger mosquito was first documented in the Croatia in 2004. Since that time, this species has spread continuously throughout the Croatia - it was rapidly distributed over the Adriatic coast and so far managed to establish stable population in the Croatian capital - Zagreb. Although not considered to spread further in the continental Croatia, mainly due to harsh continental winter, in last two years species was recorded at new localities in eastern and north-western Croatia, respectively. In 2013 one adult specimen was caught in the city of Osijek (eastern Croatia) after which monitoring of this invasive species began. In 2014 Osijek and surroundings were monitored with 30 ovitraps from August till November. Traps were checked once a week with first eggs collected during mid-September in tyre dealer backyard. First adults were recorded two weeks later. Both eggs and adults peaked at mid-October. At the same time tiger mosquito began spreading to the north-western Croatia where was recorded in ovitraps in a town of Hum na Sutli in 2013 and in town of Macelj in 2014. All those records of tiger mosquitoes implicate that this species is adapting and spreading in continental parts of Croatia despite unsuitable climatic conditions.
