Ergonomic conditions and subjective complaints in videoterminal users

Numerous studies of office workers conducted over the past 15 years have shown health complaints to be more widespread among videoterminal (VDT) users, but there is very little research to determine their cause and nature. The aim of this study was to try to find out the relationship of ergonomic features of equipment (monitors and keyboards) and work-stations and health complaints of VDT operators. Office workers working with VDT more than 20 hours/week (N=139) completed a questionnaire on subjective complaints in connection with work conditions. Ergonomic analysis was carried out according to Swedish program Screen Checker, TCO, 1986. The most common work-related health symptoms were musculo-skeletal disorders (81%), fatigue (72%) and eyestrain (45%). Out of 39 ergonomic features contained in TCO recommendation five were found inappropriate: monitor reflections (59%), lack of monitor vertical adjustment (52%), work surfaces reduces (41%), lack of local illumination (32%) and lack of leg space (25%). Results showed a high occurrence of subjective complaints, significant differences in subgroups according to the sex and to the time daily spent at VDTs and correlations between some ergonomic features and subjective complaints.
