Research Conclusions : Upper Pleistocene Hominids From Vindija, Croatia, Yugoslavia
The Hrvatsko Zagorje in northwestern Croatia, Yugoslavia, is widely recognized as a region of considerable paleoanthropological significance. Numerous localities in this region, primarily caves and rockshelters, contain extensive, often highly stratified Pleistocene deposits. Several of these have already yielded information on the evolution of Upper Pleistocene hominids and their culture as well as on patterns of faunal and climatic change (see Malez 1978a, b). The sites of Krapina (Gorjanovic-Kramberger 1906 ; Malez 1970, 1978c), Veternica (Malez 1965, 1974), and Velika Pecina (Malez 1967, 1974) are particularly well- known because remains of Upper Pleistocene hominids have been found in each. The hominids from Krapina are classified as Homo sapiens neanderthalensis (Gorjanovic- Kramberger 1906, Smith 1976b), while those from Velika Pecina and Veternica are unquestionably representatives of H. sapiens sapiens (Smith 1976a). This brief report presents some basic information on an important new hominid-bearing site in this region: the cave of Vindija. Partial excavation of this cave has yielded a large but fragmentary series of hominid remains, the majority of which are classified as H. sapiens neanderthalensis. Several specimens from the younger strata in the cave are clearly H. sapiens sapiens. Middle and Upper Paleolithic artifacts and Pleistocene faunal remains have also been recovered. More detailed discussion of the site and description of the hominid material discovered there will be presented in a later publication.
