The Potential of the Russian Railways in China-Europe Transit Cargo Transportation
The European Union, as an organization, has not been able to elaborate a joint strategy towards the Asia-Pacific region, first of all because the economic interests of the member states are very different. Some of them are very serious investors in Asia Pacific region, particularly in Asian countries like China, and have their individual bilateral relations with Asian countries. Others have not been so keen to engage yet and thus there is no strong possibility for the European Union to elaborate a common strategy, especially these days, when the EU is experiencing an economic crisis. Russia wants to become a new global transit route connecting Europe and the countries of the Far East. The country's transportation network, including the Transsiberian railroads and the Northern Sea Route in the Arctic, offer unique opportunities for transit of goods across the globe. The APEC countries support Russia's efforts to improve its Siberian transportation routes, increasing cargo traffic, but although the Siberian railroads significantly speed up cargo shipping, they lack the infrastructure, including ports on the Arctic coast. The main objective of this paper is to compare different options of railway connections and shipping containers between China and a destination in Western Europe. Potential achievable transport costs and related transit times of these new options will be measured and compare it with the currently available options for ocean transport, in particular when servicing some inland origins and destinations.
