OBR in stem cells in rat adrenal gland
OBR is a cytokine receptor for leptin, hormone produced by adipose tissue involved in the regulation of energy balance and body weight through the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis (HPA) and sympathetic autonomic system. These are also the key components in stress response. Adrenal gland is part of sympathetic nervous and endocrine systems and it is one of the points in regulation of homeostasis. It has several layers of cortex and medulla in charge for production of mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids, reproductive hormones and cathecolamines. The adult rat adrenal gland, also, has stem cell zone in the adrenal cortex, between zona glomerulosa and zona fasciculata. This zone is crucial to the long-term maintenance of the adrenal gland and its ability to respond to stress. Our finding that this zone expresses OBR implies that leptin is involved in the regulation of energy balance and survival of these cells. Disorders such as leptin resistance ultimately affect the capacity of stress response.
