Establishment of Helicopter Emergency Medical Service in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Establishment of efficient Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) is of vital interest for all the aspects of life in Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially for minimizing the consequences of road accidents and improving the medical care in specific situations like cardiovascular problems of older population, medical and rescue intervention on isolated locations and all the other critical situations, according to requirement of "golden hour". It is optimal to establish flying bases in Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Tuzla and Mostar, and to obtain four special dedicated helicopters, with 12 pilots, 12 urgent medical doctors and 12 medical rescue flyers, urgent medical receptions in four clinics and dispatch center for coordination of all activities. This work analyzed the benefits and determined the prerequisites for establishing the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
