The Pre-Romanesque in Zagreb? On the disappearance and discovery of the pluteus from Novigrad with a deer hunt display
A group of three fragments of Pre-Romanesque plutei with figural displays of warriors and horsemen from Pridraga near Novigrad is well known and has been discussed in scholarly literature many times over. Two of the fragments display warriors (a swordsman and a horseman) and the third a horseman chasing a deer with a spear in his hand. The latter fragment disappeared before the Second World War and its fate has remained unknown ever since. However, a relief with an identical display has recently been noticed, built into the façade of a late 19th century mansion in a residential neighbourhood in Zagreb. Their mutual similarities, as well as the history of the mansion itself, imply the authenticity of the Zagreb relief and arguments in support of the claim will be carried out in this paper.
