Biostratigraphical, lithological and paleoecological aspects of the Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) and Paleogene sediments in the Jihar-1 well (Palmyra region, Syria)
Jihar-1 exploration well, located in Palmyrides region in Syria, was drilled throughout Late Cretaceous (Maastri-chtian) and Paleogene sediments. Results of detailed micro- paleontological and lithological analyses have been carried out. The biostratigraphy of the sediment succesion is analysed by means of planktonic foraminifera and calcare-ous nannoplankton. From Late Cretaceous to the end of Late Eocene sedimentation took place in basinal to deep outer shelf environment. Rich and highly diversified assemblages of foraminiferal and calcareous nanoplankton association suggest Mediterranean bioprovince with tropical to sub-tropical climate and deep open shelf to upper bathyal envi-ronment. Microfossil association is most diversified during Upper Cretaceous and Middle Eocene. In Oligocene, plank-tonic species were replaced by small benthic foraminiferal species in according to climate change and shallowing of the sedimentary environment.
