Sažetak
Objectives: An epidermal cyst rarely occurs in the cervix and to our knowledge this location has not been reported in the literature. We present the case of a 48-year-old woman who developed an epidermal cyst at the cervix 24 years after the conisation. Studies suggest that human papillomavirus (HPV) or entrapment of the squamous epithelium might play a role in the formation of epidermal cysts. The cyst was accidentally punctured and diagnosed based on cytological findings. Materials and Methods: Material was obtained using a 22-gauge needle. Smears were stained with May-Grunwald-Giemsa. Results: A 48- year-old female presented with metrorraghia. Medical history revealed conisation 24 years ago because of CIN III. Clinical examination shows substantial portio and endocervical canal bleeding, which was highly suspicious of malignancy. A pap smear which came out negative was covered in blood and reparative epithelium was located. The ultrasound showed an anechogenic lesion of 2*2*3 cm at posterior lip and thickened endometrium. The next procedure was abrasion of the cervix and endometrium. During the application of anaesthesia in the cervical area, 12 cc of dense, brownish liquid content was aspirated. The aspirated material was sent to cytological and microbiological analysis. Cytological diagnosis was consistent with epidermal cyst. Conclusion: The report illustrates a rare presentation of epidermal cyst of cervix, which mimicked carcinoma, and where cytology made the final diagnosis.
