Incorporating L1 culture into Primary EFL: Research into the EFL Teachers´ Perspective
Unlike the target language culture (L2 culture) whose integration into foreign language learning has for a long time been the focus of intensive research in the field of applied linguistics, the role of the foreign language learners´ own culture (L1 culture) in FL learning has been largely neglected. In view of early foreign language learning as a compulsory component of the Croatian educational context, the author offers the theoretical underpinnings of incorporating elements of L1 (Croatian) culture into primary EFL. Taking into consideration the findings of her earlier research indicating serious difficulties observed with Croatian learners when presenting elements of their own cultural and national heritage in English, the author presents the results of a mixed-method study aimed at measuring EFL teachers´ vocabulary (in)competence in the field of the stated extralinguistic context as well as at investigating their classroom experience and attitudes toward the inclusion of L1 culture into primary EFL.
