The potential of poplar (Populus nigra var. italica) in the phytoremediation of lead

ne of the biggest problems today is pollution. Contamination with heavy metals which includes the lead (Pb), is a distinct problem because metals are not biodegradable and have negative impact on the living world. Ecologically and enivronmentally acceptable solution provides a new biotechnological process called phytoremediation, which is based on the ability of plants to clean and restore contaminated area. This study was used to assay the effect of lead on the growth of poplar (Populus nigra var. italica), phytoremediation potential of poplar for lead, his redistribution in certain parts of the plant. Some biochemical markers of oxidative stress, the amount of malondialdehyde as an indicator of lipid peroxidation and the amount of H2O2 were determined. Frutehremore the effects of lead in the soil on the activity of antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APOX), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and glutathione reductase (GR) as an indicator of the potential protection against oxidative stress were studied. All of the results together indicate that the studied poplar (Populus nigra var. italica) can be considered as a species with the potential use in phytostabilization of the soil contaminated with lead.
