Reading a fifteenth-century archival document
The palaeography workshop discussed some of the many aspects of research in this auxiliary discipline in historical studies. Our example was a manuscript of a firmly established date (the very beginning of the fifteenth century) and provenance (Chancery of the Dubrovnik Republic): a Latin court record from the Criminal Suits or the Book of Criminal Law (Lamenta de criminali sive Liber maleficiorum), a register which forms part of the Dubrovnik State Archives’ historical collection, written in chancery script. In order to be able to read, transcribe, translate, and understand the text, we surveyed the most important features of this type of script, palaeographical features such as punctuation and abbreviations, as well as the kinds of damage suffered by the paper manuscript. As for its content, the record tells of an incident in a Dubrovnik inn, presenting us with an interesting insight into everyday life in late medieval Dubrovnik.
