Interaction-induced absorption in infrared spectra of diphenyldiacetylene
Carbon rich compounds and materials are in the area of intensive research because of their interesting optical and electronic properties. An important group of such compounds are those containing acetylenic bridges with various terminal groups on their ends. These structural units are the main cause of their characteristic properties. A purpose of this work is a spectral characterisation of carbyne chain in diphenydiacetylene (DPDA) (1). IR spectra of DPDA in the solid state show only one band at 2150 cm-1 which has been assigned to the antisymmetric CC stretching. In solution two IR bands occur, one at 2220 cm-1 and other at 2152 cm-1. The wavenumber of the extra band (2220 cm-1) coincides with the value observed in the Raman spectra (2219 cm-1). An attempt of explanation of the extra IR band has been made by considering the interaction induced apsorption which occurs in solution. It is possible that DPDA molecules make dimers with solvent molecules. In order to investigate these phenomena, a number of IR experiments has been performed in a series of organic solvents with different characteristics, like polarities or acceptor numbers.
