Eugen Koren - Biomedical scientist and inventor in biotechnology
Eugen Koren, (Belgrade, 1940), biomedical scientist and innovator in biotechnology, attended elementary and high school in Zagreb and graduated at the Medical School of the University of Zagreb (1956). He acquired M.S. degree (1969) in medicinal biochemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry of the University of Zagreb and PhD degree in biochemistry (1972) at the same university. As an assistant (1967-1969) and Assistant Professor (docent) (1973-1977) he taught Physiology and Anatomy at the Department of Pharmacology of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry. After defending his Ph. D. thesis, he received a fellowship from the European Macromolecular Biology Organization (EMBO) for a post doctoral training in biochemistry (1972) at the University of Uppsala (Sweden). He spent three years (1979-1982) as a Visiting Professor at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF) in Oklahoma City, USA , during which time he also received training in cell culture and hybridoma methods at the Wistar institute in Philadelphia, USA. In the period 1982-1988 Dr Koren continued his work as a scientist at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation and, at the same time, as a Assistant Professor at the Department of Medicine of The Oklahoma University (OU). From 1989 to 1994 at those two institutions Dr Koren advanced to Associate Scientist and Associate Professor, respectively. From 1994 - 2011 he worked as a scientist and later as a director of bioanalytical departments in pharmaceutical companies Genentech, Amgen, Scios/Johnson & Johnson, Abbott Vascular, and BioMarin in the United States. Since 2011 he has own bioanalytical consulting business working with biotechnology clients in U.S.A., Australia, Europe, Israel and China. At the OMRF and OU, he investigated the role of lipoproteins in the development and regression of atherosclerosis. While working in pharmaceutical companies, he mainly investigated the immune responses caused by recombinant therapeutic proteins. He has published more than 180 articles, 9 book chapters, and 7 patents granted in the United States. He is an ad hoc reviewer and editor of numerous articles in journals Atherosclerosiss, Bioanalysis, and the Journal of Immunological Methods. During his tenure at the OMRF and OU, Dr. Koren made it possible for a number of Croatian scientists and physicians to spend one to two years working on various OMRF research projects, which shows his sense of patriotism and desire to promote Croatian science.
