Intellectual deterioration in alcoholics
Specific psychological diagnostic procedures were used to assess the functional efficiency of the central nervous system in alcoholics. One hundred and twenty alcoholics were tested. Factor analysis of the obtained results revealed two main factors which accounted for 93.9% of variance. The first factor accounted for 86.2% of variance and correlated highly with the following variables : Bender-Gestalt (-0.668), Benton (0.646) and Block Design (0.606), which denotes it as a nonverbal or more precisely a visuo-spatial factor. The second factor accounted for 7.7% of variance and correlated highly with the variables Associative memory, Verbal-logic memory and Word fluency. This factor is verbal. It can be concluded that although alcoholism produces diffuse deterioration it has more pronounced effect on nonverbal tasks because of inability to introduce new strategies in nonverbal tasks.
