Book review - High-strength ceramics interdisciplinary perspectives

This book is intended for dentist practitioners. It has novel concepts based on experience explained in a simple and understandable manner. The book is divided into 13 rich illustrated chapters. 1. Challenges in Engineering and Testing of Bioceramics. The clinical success of modern dental ceramics is predicated on a number of factors, such as, the initial physical properties of brittle materials, the fabrication and clinical procedures, and the oral environment. 2. The Role of Industry in Developing New Ceramics. Changes and advancements in dental technology and materials are influenced by dental manufacturing industries, constant assessments of new trends, market changes and needs, and patient care objectives. 3. Practice-Based Research on the Effectiveness of Ceramics. Practice-based research is now recognized as an emerging and an important method to answer the need for large scale high quality studies of the effectiveness of new materials techniques and changes in restoration design on the outcome for patients. 4. Posterior Partial-Coverage Restorations: Inlays and Onlays. Minimally invasive treatments become reliable alternatives in prosthodontics therapy. 5. Individual Ceramic Crowns for Teeth. This chapter describes the most commonly used high-strength ceramic materials for tooth-supported crown applications from clinical, laboratory, and performance perspectives. 6. Ceramic Veneers. Veneers provides the most aesthetic appearance with minimal reduction of the dental structure. Details such as colour gradation, translucent areas of the incisors, higher chroma of the gingival third, surface texture and lustre have all been meticulously considered. 7. Fixed Dental prostheses for Anterior and Posterior Teeth. Replacement of anterior and posterior teeth can be accomplished with different materials. Porcelain fused to metal is still gold standard, but because of unsatisfactory aesthetical properties all- ceramics took first place among constituent materials in fixed prosthodontics. All-ceramic full-arch prostheses can only be recommended if zirconia is used as ceramic framework material. 8. Ceramic Applications to Restore Implants. Over the years, a variety of ceramic materials have been used with great success to fabricate aesthetic and functional implant-supported restorations. 9. Cementation Procedures for Ceramics. Conventional and adhesive cementation techniques have been described and their possible failures. 10. Monolithic Zirconia Complete-Arch Reconstructions. This chapter illustrate the restorative potential of zirconia ceramic materials. 11. Successful Ceramic Application on Various Substructures. The aim of this chapter is to help technicians and dentists select proper materials and application strategies for successful prosthetic appliance, even when different dental substructures are restored with the same ceramic material. 12. Ceramic Dental Implants. This chapter aims to address the information available in literature regarding the mechanical and biological aspects of zirconia implants. 13. Digital Workflow in Reconstructive Dentistry. The principle of digital workflow in reconstructive dentistry comprises three main steps: data acquisition, data manipulation, and CAD/CAM. One of the essential tools is digital photography
