Bile salts and their derivatives as building blocks of supramolecular hosts
The anionic biological surfactant, sodium cholate, was examined in interacions with some synthetic cationic surfactants and with metal ions of increasing charges, as a model for phospholipid membranes behavior. The studied systems provide new insight into the complex behavior of precipitation, vesiculation and gelation, and better understanding all of this processes that develop in living organism (physiological and/or pathophysiological). Modified bile salts might find use as supramolecular hosts for various types of guest molecules or ions, in pharmacological applications, or in the design of potential materials. The interactions show close relationship between medicine, biotechnology, organic, macromolecular, inorganic, and physical chemistry.
