WELCOME TO DUBROVNIK! Welcome to the largest vacuum-related conference in Europe in 2012 - JVC14/EVC12/AMDVG11/CroSloVM19 - four established and traditional meetings joined together in a single event, with common lectures and program organized uniformly throughout the conference. 14th Joint Vacuum Conference is a regional meeting of six national Vacuum Societies - Austrian, Croatian, Czech, Hungarian, Slovakian and Slovenian – which evolved from the bilateral Hungarian-Austrian meeting held for the first time in 1979. 12th European Vacuum Conference is the latest continuation in a series of conferences founded by John J. Colligon in 1988, under the auspices of the European Chapter of the IUVSTA VST Division. 11th Annual Meeting of the Deutsche Vakuumgesellschaft continues a series started in 2002 with the aim to foster the cooperation between European Vacuum Societies by transnational conferences. 19th Croatian-Slovenian Vacuum Meeting is a cherished bilateral meeting of two neighbouring societies established in 1993 in order to keep scientific communications open and to promote mutual cooperation in a difficult time. The reasons for joining these established and selfstanding meetings are simple: scope and topics of these conferences are overlapping in a great deal, while their attendance is divided. Bringing attendance together would hopefully result in a higher quality science through discussions, existing and future cooperations, and general synergy effects - more communications can be established, issues discussed, ideas exchanged, and more young researchers will be immersed into the international community. The first conference organized along these principles - JVC12/EVC10/AMDVG7 in Hungary in 2008 - already proved the concept. We hope that its success will be repeated in Dubrovnik. The scientific program of the conference covers all vacuum-related fields/topics, as recognized by IUVSTA. In five days of the conference, 5 plenary, 1 laureate, 2 keynote and 16 invited lectures will be presented. The bulk of the conference will be 63 oral contributions and 122 poster presentations - a valuable and inspiring program for the interested participant. As usual, the conference is adjoined by an exhibition of 15 manufacturers of vacuum-related products - components, pumps, systems, diagnostic tools, consumables etc. Venue - Hotel Rixos Libertas - offers excellent facilities for the conference, and Dubrovnik is a traditional meeting point for people, scientists and students from all over the world. We hope you will find them both interesting and stimulating enough to make this conference a memorable event.
