Basic Principles of Term Formation in the Multilingual and Multicultural Context of EU Law
This chapter identifies some basic principles and proposes criteria for forming terms to designate EU legal concepts and institutions for the purpose of EU multilingual lawmaking in general, and by candidate countries for translating the EU acquis, in particular. Attention is focused on the basic dilemma whether effective communication is best served by aligning a term on the other language versions or by creating terms that aim to satisfy target user expectations, thus favouring creativity over conformity. Recommending a multilingual approach to EU term formation, the author cites examples from a large number of ‘old’ and ‘new’ languages, including Croatian.
