Self-organisation in liquid mixtures

Liquid mixtures in particular display different types of organizational behavior. Structuring in simple mixtures doesn’t form a noticeable pattern neither on the local nor on the global scale, whereas more complex mixtures show phenomena such as micro-heterogeneity or local immiscibility of the components (Perera A, et al. (2012) Micro-Heterogeneity in Complex Liquids. In: Molecular Dynamics - Studies of Synthetic and Biological Macromolecules, ed Wang L (InTech) pp 193-220.). Aqueous mixtures in particular are microheterogeneous, and their structural properties vary strongly with concentration. The physical origin of such local structuring is mostly driven by the strong and directional hydrogen bonding and induced hydrophobic effect. Insight in the microscopic structure comes mostly from the molecular dynamics simulations. We describe different types of liquid organisation using simulation and experimental data. We show first examples of simple and complex mixtures, and afterward the different types of structuring in complex mixtures depending on the concentration. The most important ideas of this reasherch are: our focus is to uncover the intrinsic features of water as one of the most important solutions ; the fact that self organisation exists already on the nanoscale in liquids ; and lastly we examine the physical principles behind the local structuring in liquids, which are responsible also for large scale associations and building of biological complexes.
