IKON 7 - Iconology at the Crossroads

The Seventh volume of IKON – journal of iconographic studies - addresses the problemes and themes related to iconology and introduces the texts presented at the Sixth International Conference of Iconographic Studies, organized in Rijeka in May 2013 by the Centre for Iconographic Studies at the University of Rijeka, the Iconology Research Group at the Department of Art History at the Catholic University of Leuven, Cultural Iconology and Semiography Research Group at the University of Szeged and the Index of Christian Art at the University in Princeton. The conference was a part of a larger, transregional conference “Iconology Old and New“, held in Rijeka, Budapest and Szeged consecutively. The collaboration of the various institutions has enabled endorsement of the platform for promoting iconographic studies, which in turn, facilitates networking, communication and exchange of ideas and project objectives among individuals and institutions. This issue of IKON presents articles that critically analyze the role of iconology in the last 30 years, taking as a starting point for discussion the conference held in Princeton in 1982. The works discuss the relation between iconography and iconology, the so-called new iconology, or a new direction in the development of the method after 90s, the interdisciplinary approach to “image“ following the “Warburg’s method”, the relationship between words and images as one of the fundamental problems of iconological method, te revisiting and re-evaluation of the work of the founders of the method as well as the iconological interpretation of the selected art works. In addition to the texts that were presented at the conference the journal is enriched with one contribution to the discussed subject and presentations of recent publications in the field of iconography and iconology.
