Survival of rat fetal neural retina in serum-free media in vitro and in subcapsular kidney transplants in vivo
Neural retina from the eyes of 20-day-old Fisher rat fetuses was cultivated in a serum-free culture model at the air-liquid interface for 12 days or transplanted under the kidney capsule of adult rats for 15 days. During cultivation or after transplantation retina has lost its normal spatial relationships and rosettes were formed. Ultrastructural analysis confirmed survival of retinal cells even in the simplest protein-free medium in vitro. Photoreceptors, Mueller neuroglia, microglia and retinal plexiform layers were found.
