Croatian high school students' attitudes toward the English language in the context of multilingualism
The phenomenon of multilingualism has become a very important and common aspect of today's society. Most of the world's population is able to speak more than one language and being multilingual is not an exception any more. In the last few decades, English has emerged as the dominant language, spoken by more people than any other language in the world. Today, it is often described as the global language or lingua franca. Being multilingual nowadays very often implies English and other languages. The purpose of this thesis is to present Croatian high school students' attitudes toward the multilingualism and its aspects in the modern world, with the focus on the English language and its role within it. We present the results of a questionnaire, the aim of which was to investigate whether Croatian high school students were motivated enough to improve their language proficiency, whether they thought that the English language was enough, and what they believed to be the main advantages of English learning.
