Effect of omega-3 enriched food on blood pressure, microcirculation and lipid profile in young healthy men

Objective There is a lack of studies showing the effect of everyday food enriched with omega-3 fatty acids on lipid profile and cardiovascular system.This study aimed to determine the effect of omega-3 enriched food consumption on blood pressure, microvascular reactivity and lipid profile in young healthy men. Design and Methods 20 young healthy men(age 20.8±1.2) were recruited and included in diet protocol(DP).DP consisted of 3 weeks of consuming omega-3 enriched chicken eggs(3 eggs per day, N=10 ; omega group (OG) or regular chicken eggs(3 eggs per day, N=10 ; control group(CG)). Chicken omega eggs were produced by changing the diet of laying hens.Blood samples for lipide profile, fasting blood glucose concentrations(fBGC) and high sensitive CRP(hsCRP) were collected.Microvascular reactivity was assessed using laser Doppler flowmetry and blood pressure was measured on the first and last day of the DP. Results Systolic(123±5 mmHg before vs.116±4 mmHg after DP)and diastolic pressure(71±7 mmHg before vs.67±7mmHg after DP)significantly decreaed in OG subjects after DP.No changes in arterial blood pressure in CG after DP was observed (systolic 125±8 mmHg, diastolic 74±5 mmHg before vs systolic 127±7 mmHg, diastolic 75±4 mmHg after DP). Microvascular reactivity was improved in OG(∆R-O ; 1.03±0.25 before vs. 1.32±0.23 after protocol), while no changes were noticed in CG.Triglycerides in blood significantly lowered in OG(1.23±0.57 mmol/L before vs. 0.89±0.26 mmol/L after DP).Cholesterol, LDL, HDL did not change in OG.Lipid profile did not show any changes in CG after DP.fGBC and hsCRP did not change in OG neither CG after DP.Changes in arterial blood pressure were significantly correlated to changes in microvascular reactivity of overall subjects. Conclusion The study showed the improving effect of omega-3 enriched food on microvascular reactivity, arterial blood pressure and triglycerides in young healthy subjects indicating the role of omega-3 enriched food in cardiovascular prevention.
