The analysis of presenilin cellular localization in Niemann-Pick type C cells
Neurodegeneration is the progressive loss of structure or function of neurons, including death of neurons. Neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson’s disease (PD), Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Huntington’s disease occur as a result of neurodegenerative processes. Degenerative nerve diseases involve accumulation of aggregation-prone proteins in the brain that causes neuronal dysfunction, degeneration and death. The most common neurodegenerative diseases, such as AD and PD, are considered idiopathic (i.e. sporadic), although there are rare inherited forms of the disease caused by mutations in several genes. Both forms of AD/PD, idiopathic and familial, show similar pathological features in their brains highlighted by the accumulation of amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) in AD and accumulation of α-synuclein in PD. Among a number of hypothesis of the pathogenesis of AD/PD, it has been recently suggested that they may share a common mechanism(s) leading to accumulation of aggregation-prone proteins in the brain
