Colour Terms in English and Croatian
The purpose of this paper is to give a comprehensive overview of the colour terms in collocations, to explore processes underlying our conceptualization of colours and some of their possible linguistic instantiations in the languages under study: English and Croatian. Using the theoretical framework of cognitive linguistics, we will analyse and describe the processes leading to figurative use of collocational units, highlighting the senses outside the colour domain. It will be argued that similar cognitive mechanisms can only partly account for the wealth of the figurative expressions across languages. A rather dynamic approach to meaning interpretation will be offered, involving both generally shared knowledge structures and relevant cultural factors. Finally, we will try to confirm our assumption that possible universalities could be assigned to common aspects of our immediate surroundings while variations to our cultural specificities.
