Pineal cyst surgery – 20 years of experience
Diagnostic and treatment algorithm in patients operated for symptomatic pineal cysts is analyzed, based on our 20-year experience in treating such patients. Methods: We analyzed the data of patients with symptomatic pineal cysts operated at our institution in the past 20 years. A total of 110 patients were treated surgically. There were 78 female and 32 male patients. Symptoms included headaches, seizures and visual disturbances. Preoperative evaluation included a thorough neurological exam with EEG evaluation, ophthalmologic assessment and brain MRI. All patients were operated in the sitting position by the supracerebellar infratentorial approach. Characteristics of this approach as well as the outcome of the patients were analyzed. Results: Neurological and neurophysiological characteristics of patients were analyzed pre and postoperatively showing that clinical condition improved in all patients. There was no perioperative mortality. Conclusion: In selected cases pineal cyst removal is safe and effective procedure with low morbidity and good clinical outcome.
