Variation in Total Phenolic Contents and Antioxidant Activities of Commercial Wheat Cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) Grown in Croatia
Health-beneficial phytochemicals presents in wheat whole-grain make it a potential source of functional food ingredients. 15 wheat commercial cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) were grown at the Agricultural Institute Osijek during the 2012/2013 crop year and evaluated for total phenolic contents (TPC) and their antioxidant activity (AOA). TPC was determined by Folin- Ciocalteu method and AOA evaluated using DPPH Scavenging Capacity. All the assays were done in duplicate, from two separate extractions. There were significant differences among genotypes for TPC and AOA. A significant positive correlation (P<0.05) was found between indicators of antioxidant potential. Cultivars Apache, Anđelka and Vulkan showed the highest TPC, whereas the highest AOA were found in cultivars Vulkan, Leuta and Renata. Cultivars Srpanjka and Divana showed the lowest antioxidant properties regarding the TPC and AOA values. The obtained genotypes differences indicate that through the breeding programmes more attention should be given to the development of new wheat lines with improved nutritional and health beneficial properties.
