Regional schools and water supply in the county of Požega-Slavonija and Sisak-Moslavina

School does not consist only of children but also of professors, parents and other personnel. In smaller towns schools are much more than educational institutions. Very often they are the meeting places of the entire community and the reason for people to hold out in the countryside. According to the Institute for Statistics, Croatia has 1222 district schools. According to the State Pedagocial Standard, schools have to meet hygienic-technical standards related to: illumination, level insolation, airiness, thermal insulation, noise insulation, accoustic properties of classrooms, heating and air-cooling, water supply, wastewater drainage (sewage), electrical installations, computer installation and fire protection. Hygienic-technical standards require that safe drinking water for schools should be supplied from the water supply. In many regional schools, however, certain pedagogical and hygienic standards are not met. The paper has studied the water supply in selected district schools in the Sisak-Moslovina county, of which there are 48, and in the Požega-Slavonija county, of which there are 59. The paper considers all bacteriological and chemical indicators as well as their impact on health. From the Požega-Slavonija county, water supply and water quality have been tested in 22 regional schools and one primary school which are not connected to the public water supply and the water is not regularly controlled. Water is used from local wells, many of them 30 to 100 years old, and in one of the schools water is used from the local water supply. In three schools water is regularly chlorinated, in five only periodically, and in the rest never. Samples have been analyzed on „A“ analysis, bacteriological, physical- chemical and also on seven metals (iron, manganese, copper, zinc, lead, cadmium and mercury). Results show that water samples from all the schools are bacteriologically improper according to all the coliforms and according to E.coli and enterococi almost half of the samples. Chemical analysis shows better results because only in a few samples were found elevated concentrations of ammonium and nitrate. As to metals, only rarely are concentrations of iron, manganese, lead and zinc higher. In most of the schools water is used only in the toilet facilities while children drink water from the machines and in one school they bring their own water in bottles. On the contrary, in the Sisak-Moslovina county water supply has been studied in five district schools connected to the public water supply system and, as expected, the water was a satisfactory by all indicators.
