Aluminium (At) is a widely used non-essentiaf trače element of low toxidty that may accumufafe t human body. Toxic levels of Al may impair the brain, kidneys, and bones, Ambiental Al exposufe monitdring is used for the assessment of the occupational Al exposure, butthere are no avaiiac e : : indieators for biomonitormg environmental Al population expsosure, We have studied hair Al (HA{; ; ; ; ; ) in 310 apparentiy hea(thy and occupationaily nonexposed aduit sl : (123 men and 187 vvomen), and whole blood Al (W8A|) in 232 of them (90 men and 142 womer z HAi and WBA! were anaiyzed with the inductivefy coupled plasma mass spectrometry (lCP MS -). H a1 was below detection limit (0, 9 pg g ) in 6 subjects, and WBA1 wa$ below the detection limit (0, 09 c 123 subjects. We used the logistic bioassay sigmoid curve of median derivatives to analyze natura! distribat c - : the hair and whole blood. Men accumulated more HAi than women (men median = 6.58 pg»g < s vvomen median = 4, 86 jig-g"1). The HAt concentrations below 2.11 pig-g1 and 1.45 M-g^g'"1 reflec:e-r -X ; observable effect level of environmental Al exposure for men and vvomen, re$pectively. estimated the upper limit for WBAj - a short term bioindicator of environmental Al exposure - :c >:> i 'M j |ig- gl for men and 0.20 jig-g1 for vvomen.
