The difference in cytokine levels between odontogenic tumors and odontogenic cysts

Aim To evaluate the cytokine levels of odontogenic tumor and odontogenic cyst fluids. Methodology Aspirates from 15 benign odontogenic cysts and 15 tumors of the jaw were collected and randomized, and a formal incisional biopsy was performed. The biopsies revealed keratocystic odontogenic tumor and dentigerous cyst. The levels of interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1alpha) and tumor necrosis factor- alpha (TNF-alpha) were determined by ELISA using commercially available kits. Control group consisted of uninflamed periradicular tissues obtained from periapical regions of 15 unerupted and incompletely formed third molars. The teeth included in this group had to meet the following criteria: no history of pulpal pain, no caries lesions on clinical and radiographic examination. One-way ANOVA analysis and post-hoc Sheffe tests were used to determine the difference between groups. Results No statistically significant difference in cytokine levels were found between odontogenic tumors and odontogenic cysts considering IL-1 alpha (P=0.897) and TNF-alpha (P=0.449). When cytokine levels in odontogenic tumors and odontogenic cysts were compared to control group, statistically signifficant differences were found in levels of both IL-1 and TNF-alpha. Post-hoc analysis confirmed higher levels of IL-1 alpha and TNF-alpha in both odontogenic tumors and odontogenic cysts in comparisson to control group (all P values < 0.001). Conclusions There was no statisticaly significant difference in IL-1 alpha and TNF- alpha levels between odontogenic cysts and tumors. However levels of both IL-1 alpha and TNF-alpha were signifficantly increased in odontogenic cysts and tumors when compared to control group.
