Financial exclusion analysis with a focus on the Croatian young people

The aim of this paper is to examine the concept, forms and strategies used to reduce financial exclusion with special emphasis on financial exclusion of the young people in the Republic of Croatia. Financial exclusion primarily refers to the process in which people face difficulties in accessing appropriate financial products and services that would enable them acceptable social integration. It can be concluded that the problem of financial exclusion, which refers to withholding financial products and services to individuals and disadvantaged social groups, has been present in Croatia for a very long time. All the countries faced with the problem of financial exclusion devote special attention to developing systems that will lead to the suppression and limitation of this phenomenon. In practice there are many ways and mechanisms for combating problems of financial exclusion but still there is no single mechanism that would efficiently resolve the problem. This paper provides recommendations and possible ways of reducing the problem of financial exclusion. It attempts to indicate the size of financial exclusion in Croatia, especially among the young people ; students aged 20 to 25 who are potential users of financial products and services. The results of this study indicate towards the recognition of the importance of providing financial products and services to the young people on the one hand, and the other hand, the necessity to increase public awareness regarding this problem. In order to further analyse the issue, other age groups, minorities, people living in rural areas and people with low incomes, along with the young, should be surveyed.
