Exploring the entrepreneurs’ motivation: A comparative analysis
By employing a logistic regression analysis, this paper tests the relationship between the engagement in the new entrepreneurial activity motivated by opportunity or necessity as the dependent variable and a set of demographic, psychographic and perceptual (socio-cultural, growth aspiration and industry/organizational) variables. The main purpose of the paper is to deepen the understanding of the factors that influence entrepreneurial motivation in Croatia, by comparing them with the factors significant in the context of post-socialist and developed European countries that participated in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor project in 2007. The findings indicate that the same set of characteristics distinguishes opportunity- and necessity-driven entrepreneurship. These characteristics have an opposite impact on entrepreneurs’ motivation in all studied samples. However, the socio- cultural and institutional context matters when it comes to entrepreneurial motivation. While new job growth and innovation in the product/market matrix are significant differentiators of opportunity-driven entrepreneurs in the context of developed and post-socialist countries, none of the organizational and growth aspiration variables were found significant in Croatia. There are also significant differences in the impact of media and egalitarianism. These differences are discussed in the paper.
