Quality assessment of a PhD programme at Medical Faculty Osijek

The aim of this study was to assess quality and students' satisfaction with current PhD program of Biomedicine and Health at the Medical Faculty University Josip Juraj Strossmayer of Osijek (Croatia), in order to plan its further development and organization. 35 PhD students enrolled at the programme have filled an anonymous questionnaire covering several aspects of the program, including prevalence of different fields of biomedicine in the curricula, quality of teaching, opportunities for learning new skills, application of telemedicine, teachers’ commitment to PhD courses and overall organization. They were asked to rank their satisfaction with the quality of different domains of the program with grades from 1 (insufficient) to 5 (excellent). Students were generally satisfied with the programme rating the assessed domains with average grade 3.89±0.47. The lowest grade was given for the frequency of using telemedicine (2.67±0.19) and distribution of different fields of biomedicine in curricula (3.3±0.21). Students enrolled in the programme longer than 3 years found that introduction of advanced language courses would be beneficial for their scientific career (p=0.032). PhD students from the field of dental medicine and basic medical sciences were less satisfied with the prevalence of courses in clinical and laboratory skills in the curricula (p=0.47 and 0.21, respectively). Results of our study suggest that introduction of new courses from the fields related to dental medicine and basic medical sciences could enhance students’ satisfaction with the curricula. In addition, usage of telemedicine and introduction of advanced language courses would further increase the quality of the programme.
