Compliance with ORPHEUS standards at one Croatian school – student's prospective
Since substantial differences among PhD programs exist worldwide, there is an increasing need for introducing standards in PhD education and quality control programmes. Organisation for PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System (ORPHEUS), the Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE), and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) have proposed new Standards for PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in Europe in 2012 (7th ORPHEUS Conference, Bergen, Norway). Given document presents framework of a good PhD programme, aiming to reconcile obvious differences among the institutions, countries and even continents. As a permanent member of ORPHEUS organisation Faculty of Medicine University J. J. Strossmayer of Osijek (MEFOS) accepts the framework given by above mentioned document and plans to implement these directives into practise, however, it remains to be evaluated whether our human and infrastructural recourses can assure good basis for achieving the outcomes set by this directives. The aim of this study was to assess the capacity of the MEFOS for introducing ORPHEUS standards in its PhD programme from a PhD students´ perspective. Long term goal was to use these results for creating the development strategy of the PhD program at MEFOS, and preparing the institution for harmonization with European standards in research and PhD education. This study evaluated students experience and their perspective on the quality of (1) research environment, (2) outcomes, (3) admission policy and criteria, (4) PhD training programme, and (5) supervision at MEFOS. 46 PhD students were given questionnaire including 34 questions with scaled (1-5, 1 – fully disagree to 5 – fully agree) or yes/no answers. Results: (1) average grade (G)=4.1 ; (2) G=4.6 ; (3) G=3.7 ; (4) G=4.0 and (5) G=4.0. Based on students evaluation, our PhD program complies to most of the proposed standards.
