Properties of pine processionary fibre (Thaumatopoea Pityocampa Schiff)
Pine forests are regularly the object of forest pests attack and the most notable place is held by the pine processionary (Thaumetopoea pityocampa Schiff.). It is considered a serious pest because the caterpillars graze on pine needles, so the trees are defoliated, thus significantly reducing the total value of coastal forests. Due to its poisonous hairs, the caterpillar of pine processionary is a threat to human and animal health because it causes local irritation and allergies. During the cocoon spinning, caterpillars extrude silk that solidifies in the air and forms white silken nests in sunlit areas of the pine tree. Therefore, it is evident that previous studies were focused only on the mass appearance of pine processionary, while the fibre was mostly neglected. The paper presents the investigation of the morphology and textile - technological properties of pine processionary fibre whereat the fineness, strength, elongation at break was determined and the fibre surface analyzed using SEM microscopy. The same properties were investigated on cultivated silk, raw and degummed silk, and on wild silk, for comparison. Systematic studies of fibres from unconventional sources, such as pine caterpillar, open the possibility of exploiting raw materials, which in today's eco- systems represents a special problem. The pine processionary fibre is by its properties similar to conventional fibres that are exploited for thousands of years. Finding the technology of isolating these fibres from the nest may supply raw materials for further processing while freeing the environment of unwanted pests.
