Verbotonal Approach to the Early Diagnosis and Rehabilitation of Children with Hearing and Speech Defects

SUVAG Polyclinic Zagreb is a leading Croatian institution for health care of persons with speech and communication problems, a unique institution in the Republic of Croatia and world centre for development, interpretation and promotion of the verbotonal method and its application. SUVAG is an acronym of the name: System of Universal Verbotonal Audition Guberina (Système Universel Verbotonal d´Audition Guberina). The verbotonal method was defined in Petar Guberina’s Linguistics of speech. The speech is the structure emerging from sound and movement using body as a source and brain as a processor of speech content and its forms. At the SUVAG Polyclinic we carried out: health care of persons with difficulties in speech communication (diagnostics of all difficulties connected to hearing and/or speech problems, rehabilitation of listening and/or speech) ; education of hearing and/or speech impaired children (of preschool and school age) ; research and development (science and research activity, education of Croatian and abroad verbotonal specialists, teaching foreign languages SGAV). There are two main forms of rehabilitation: outpatient rehabilitation (it is implemented usually twice a week by individual work) and complex rehabilitation of listening and/or speech (children attended education programs in SUVAG Polyclinic day-care and school were they are included in everyday group and individual rehabilitation with application of specific rehabilitation procedures and electroacoustic equipment). There are different rehabilitation programs: individual auditory and/or speech rehabilitation ; group rehabilitation procedures with education ; phonetic rhythms (music stimulation and body movement stimulation) ; early rehabilitation program with parent counselling (hearing impaired children and children with difficulties in speech development) and supportive educational workshops for parents of hearing and/or speech impaired children. In the Center for cochlear implant and new technologies is possible to learn all necessary information on cochlear implant, do preoperational diagnostic and assessment of candidates, fit a speech processor, rehabilitate auditory perception and speech and monitor patient after surgery. In our institution the number of CI users is increasing so that in March 2010 was around 370 (90 % of our CI users are children). To develop listening and vivid speech is the basic aim of the verbotonal rehabilitation and education and necessary presumption to overcome hearing and speech impaired child handicaps. On this way Zagreb SUVAG Polyclinic for almost five decades obtain significant results.
