Physico-chemical database of binary polymer blends based on styrene and 2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide

The present work is a subsidiary contribution to our previous studies [1][2] concerning polymer/polymer miscibility. The purpose is to facilitate modeling and understanding the phase behavior phenomena in homopolymer/homopolymer, homopolymer/copolymer, and copolymer/copolymer blends, based on styrene, on 2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide, and on their derivatives, by using unpublished experimental data. As it is known, there is an overall paucity of available information on the thermodynamic properties of polymer blends, especially if one of the components is a random or alternating copolymer. The type of data for different polymer systems varies considerably in quality, quantity and in the nature of experimental information provided, and that makes tabulation of data difficult. For that reason, a systematic study in analyzing all available experimental data (most of them are from our laboratory) and related details concerning miscibility and phase behavior in binary blends of above mentioned systems was done, and an electronic database was built up. The experimental data are accounted for on the basis of individual segmental interaction parameters by applying mean-field theory. For each polymer blend, the database contains the following information’s: component codes or identification numbers, system type code (homopolymer/homopolymer, homopolymer/copolymer, and copolymer/copolymer) composition code of the constituent for the copolymers, composition of the blend, number of data points, data type code - such as miscibility/immiscibility behavior of the blend at a given temperature, and finally the data themselves. In addition, the relevant literature references are included. _____________________________ [1] G.Bogdanić, R.Vuković, F.E.Karasz, W.J.MacKnight, Fluid Phase Equilibria, 139, 277-294 (1997).
