Manors in Baranja County in the 18th and 19th century
Fundamental characteristic of late feudal relations in Slavonia and Baranja are result of events occurred immediately after the war with the Turks. Although noble estates existed in the middle ages perennial Turkish rule resulted with loss of legal basis for their holding and the new possessors became the prominent nobles from all over the Austrian Empire, who were given those estates as a gift for participating in the war against the Turks. Such forms of estates occured in Baranja in 18 century and the first such estates were given to Janos and Fridrich Veterani who possessed Darda and surroundings and the Archduke Eugen of Savoy, to whom King Leopold ceded possession of Bellye. In the north of Baranja county estates were mainly given to foreigners as well as to prominent Hungarian aristocrats. Beside the manorial system the structure of the local administration within the borders of the county and the establishment of the local administrative organs is also a very important subject belonging to the theme of the article. Everyday life of the county and the city of Pécs (turning into a royal free city) should be introduced through the examination of the county assembly’s minutes and other important archive documents related to this subject. In the following article, we will also explain the legal regulation of manors in Baranja county and changes in ownership relations that manors had been exposed to during the 18th and 19th century
