Legal Regulation of Trade of Fish, Wine and Salt in the Statutes of Dalmatian Cities in the Medieval Time

Economic development of Dalmatian cities in the period between 13th and 15th century was significantly contributed by the trade of fish, wine and salt, which were the export products of this maritime area, and also by the kind of fiscal revenue of medieval coastal and island destinations. The significance of the contribution that the trade of these conducive products made was the reason that the legal regulation of this important medieval business was regulated by the statutes of Dalmatian cities and islands, which in a different way regulated certain aspects of the sale of aforementioned products, as well as it regulated the inclusion of Adriatic cities in the Mediterranean trade. Due to its importance in the diet of the population as well as for the protection of communal economic and fiscal goals food products, especially salt, fish, wheat and wine were particularly supervised by the communal government which encouraged import of scarce products and discouraged import of the goods which it had in abundance. Using the statutes of certain Dalmatian cities, which began to be fixed in the second half of the 13th century, further in the text we will present the legal framework of the regulation of trade of the most important products. The main objective of this research is not only to present in details the main provisions of particular statutes which are related to trade, but also to determine the role of the trade of fish, wine and salt in the economic development of medieval Dalmatian cities.
