Nitric Oxide in Neonatology
Nitric oxide (NO) has a major role in the regulation of pulmonary blood flow and mediates the reduction in pulmonary vascular resistance associated with birth. Inhaled, NO relaxes pulmonary vascular smooth muscle and is inactivated without altering the systemic vascular bed. Its efficacy and safety has been undoubtedly proved for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension disregard of cause of neonatal hypoxic respiratory failure. In the vast majority of hypoxic newborns sustained improvement of oxygenation occurred in the first hour of treatment. There were no considerable adverse effects noted with the usual clinical dosage regimens.
