Allegory and the Construction of Modernity in the Study of Renaissance Poetics
The paper examines the treatment of allegory in the scholarship on "Renaissance" poetics (Spingarn, Saintsbury, Smith, Atkins, Weinberg, etc.), showing how these authors' accounts of the rise of poetic modernity at the "Renaissance" proceed by methodically suppressing the continued presence of the allegorical conception of imaginative literature in the period's poetical thought.
